Dragon Ball is one of the best sci-fi fantasy anime that has millions of fans all over the world. Its protagonist Goku is arguably the most popular Shonen protagonist. Although the series began as a loose adaptation of Journey to the West, as time went on, the manga got better and better. It is surprising that the series started as a humble adventure-gag manga and has achieved so much over the years. One of the key reasons for its success is its main character, Goku.
Just like the manga, Goku too evolved drastically with time. It is tough to even imagine how he once used to be the monkey-tailed hero who set out to prove himself many years ago. Although Goku’s character development is a result of hundreds of events, five key moments truly changed him in previously unimaginable ways. Today we look at these five moments to understand how Goku was influenced by them.
Meeting Bulma
It was Goku’s meeting with Bulma that started some of the most important adventures of his life. When she asked Goku to help her find Dragon Balls, he finally came out of his Grandpa Gohan’s house and ventured into the unknown world. The journey led to several unforgivable memories and he met Yamcha, Master Roshi, Emperor Pilaf, and Oolong along the way. If we seriously think about it, Dragon Ball simply would have never been possible if Bulma had not met Goku and asked him to go on a quest to find Dragon Balls. It was Bulma who brought her to the outside world since he was secluded until that point. It was not surprising since he was naïve and lacked basic social skills when he ventured outside his Grandpa Gohan’s house.
Losing Krillin
Goku’s growth and the trajectory of the Dragon Ball series were heavily impacted by the death of Krillin. Tambourine, the Demon King Piccolo’s henchman slew him along with many other important characters. It was an important moment not just for Goku but the series as well, since it motivated Goku to fight Piccolo and also sparked a sense of darkness in the Dragon Ball series. It was one of those rare instances when Goku developed a complicated vengeful relationship with a villain of the series. His hate for Piccolo grew with time as he started taking down Goku’s friends one after the other.
Marrying Chi-Chi
Although most fans remember the battle between Piccolo and Goku as the turning point of the final arc in the original series, the real twist was Goku agreeing to fulfill his childhood promise to marry Chi-Chi. He had two children with her wife and it transformed his worldview. Earlier he used to be more reckless but after he had two sons, he was now driven to fight in order to protect them.
Fighting Raditz and Dying at Piccolo’s hands
The introduction of Raditz was also a key moment in the Dragon Ball series. Although it is the point at which Dragon Ball the anime split off into Dragon Ball Z. But, Goku doesn’t change much until he sacrifices himself to make sure that Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon slays Raditz. Dying changes Goku’s perspective on life and he can now see the bigger picture which he had avoided for so long. It pushes him to work harder and achieve near-cosmic levels of power. He trained under King Kai who taught him how he could become a much better fighter. Goku was already the best fighter in the world, King Kai showed him the new plateaus he could reach.
Turning Super Saiyan
When Goku transformed into a Super Saiyan while fighting Frieza, it was truly the biggest turning point of his life. Goku has already changed significantly by this point but this transformation finally created the Goku we know. The Super Saiyan transformation at the time in the story was a big thing and it changed Goku’s perspective on achieving new power levels.
All these moments were probably the most crucial ones in Goku’s life. They helped the hero we know to learn and get better. If any one of these things had not happened it is tough to imagine how deeply it might have influenced Goku’s character development. His personality is a culmination of the lessons learned from these five key moments. There were other moments too that had long-term consequences for Goku but none of them were as crucial as these five. Goku as a hero was challenged by bigger and better enemies so it was crucial that he was changed by moments such as this to become a better person and warrior.
