The directors of Cherry, Russo Brothers, shared that they have bought the novels’ rights while the author Nico Walker was in prison.
Anthony and Joe Russo’s upcoming movie Cherry is a crime drama film. It is based on Walker’s 2018 novel of the same name. It stars Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo. The book is a semi-autobiographical on the author’s life.
The plot follows an Army medic suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD). He is addicted to the drug opioids and begins to rob the banks to arrange drugs for his addiction. Walker got arrested for an eleven-year sentence in April 2011. During the period of his imprisonment, he wrote down the novel partially based on his life. After the direction of the Avenger: Endgame, Cherry will be the first film the Russo brothers have directed.
The production studio AGBO bought the rights to the book in August 2018. The studio then cast actor Tom Holland for the role of protagonist later in August 2018. And the rest of the cast, including Ciara Bravo, Jack Reynor, Jeff Wahlberg, Kyle Harvey, Forrest Goodluck, and Michael Gandolfini, joined the cast in October.
The shooting of the movie started on 8 October 2019. The Russo brothers shared that the team needs to re shoot and rewrite some parts of the movie.
Recently, during an interview with Deadline, Anthony and Joe Russo shared the movie Cherry’s whole production journey and revealed their interaction with the author of the book Walker. The Russo brothers said they had read the novel a few years ago, and they loved the plot. The production house acquired the novel’s rights by putting Walker on the phone, who was in prison.
Anthony said that they read the book a couple of years ago and somebody has recommended it to them. And as they read, they fell for the book’s plot. They wanted to translate the book into a movie. After that, they started to begin the procedure. Their inquiry took them to Nico Walker, who was in prison at that time.
Russo brothers are best known for their films, including Captain America: Civil War, Marvel Cinematic Universe: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Endgame, and Avengers: Infinity War. 2019 Endgame is one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, with an overall gross of $2.78 billion.
However, the upcoming film, Cherry is a small budget project compared to the Russo brothers’ record. Still, the movie is fairly ambitious. The directors have a passion for the movie and a personal attachment to it. They acquired the rights of the book when the author was in prison. Hopefully, the creative passion of the filmmakers results in a brilliant screenplay.
