Apart from Slide Over and Split View, there are two additional components to multi-tasking: Picture-in-Picture and App Switcher. These features have been improved over time, and you cannot resist using them because they give you a better user experience.

Slide Over

The Slide Over feature allows you to operate a second app to the left or right of the current screen. It is a floating iPhone-sized pane that you can also hide or re-summon by sliding a little.

Using the Slide Over Feature on iPad 

The steps to use the Slide Over feature on the iPad are:

  1. Bring up the Dock by swiping from bottom to top of the screen on the iPad.
  2. Locate the app you want to use and drag the same in the Dock.
  3. Bring the app to the center of the screen by dragging and release.
  4. To hide the Slide Over app, tap on the edit icon and slide it to the right or left of the screen.
  5. To bring up a new app as Slide Over, drag the same on your existing Slide Over screen.

Repositioning an App in Slide Over

The steps to reposition an app in Slide Over are:

  1. Press and drag the edit icon to position the Slide Over window to the right or left of the screen.
  2. Release the window on the screen.
  3. Press and drag the Slide Over window to the right or left of the screen to dismiss the window.

Split View

The Split View feature allows you to use two applications side-by-side on the iPad screen. Certain iPads enable you to resize the Split View screens for a 25-75, 50-50, or 75-25 split.

Using the Split View Feature on the iPad 

The steps to use the Split View feature on the iPad are:

  1. Bring up the Dock by swiping from bottom to top of the screen on the iPad.
  2. Locate the app you want to use and drag the same in the Dock.
  3. Bring the app to the extreme right or left of the screen until a blank space appears.
  4. Now, release the drag, and the window will split into two.

Repositioning an App in Split View

The steps to reposition an app in Split View are:

  1. To reposition the Split View window, press and drag the edit icon to the center of the screen.
  2. Now, drag the edit handle to the right or left of the screen to reposition and release.
  3. Drag the edit handle of the app to the right or left side of the screen to move an app.

Picture-in-Picture

Not all apps support the Picture-in-Picture feature. Thus, if the app you’re using supports the same, it allows you to minimize the video you’re watching, which floats on top of the screen you’re working on. For instance, if you want to use any social media app, you can use the same while playing the video in a minimized window or pause the video. Additionally, you can position the minimized window anywhere on the screen.

App Switcher

To access the App Switcher, you’ll need to swipe from the bottom of the screen to the middle and hold the same until the App Switcher appears. The Switcher consists of three parts: The Dock, recently used apps, and App Spaces. The App Spaces are present at the top of the screen, and the recent apps can be found by swiping right on the screen.
